Skin care: Quick tips for better looking skin

  • Banish body breakouts with bar soap
For clear skin, skip antibacterial body washes and reach for an antibacterial bar soap instead.  The active ingredients in bar soap are more effective because they’re not diluted with water.   How to do it:  Lather up and allow the foam to stay in contact with your skin for at least five minutes. One product is Dial Antibacterial Deodorant Bar Soap that is available in supermarkets.

    Prevent chafing with deodorant
Glide on deodorant anywhere your skin rubs together.  It’ll act as a barrier against the friction.   How to do it:  Use a stick deodorant and allow the area to dry completely before getting dressed.  That way you’ll avoid embarrassing white marks on your clothing.

Smooth a peeling tan with yogurt
The lactic acid in yogurt helps to slough away dead skin.   How to do it:  Smooth a dollop of cool yogurt over the peeling area, and then massage it in with a damp washcloth.  The nubby texture of the washcloth will lift peeling skin without removing the sensitive, new skin underneath.

Sooth sunburn with iced green tea
The antioxidant EGCG in green tea quickly reduces inflammation and relieves soreness.   How to do it:  Brew a pitcher of green tea and chill it in the fridge.  Dampen a soft washcloth with the tea and gently apply the cold compress to your skin.

Stop shiny skin with papaya and mangos
These color fruits are packed with vitamin A, an antioxidant that speeds cell turnover to remove dead, dry cells on the skin’s surface that retain oil.  These tropical gems are also rich in enzymes that tame oil production.

How to do it:  Blend 2-3 cubes of mango and papaya until smooth.  Spoon out and apply to a clean, dry face.  Leave on for five minutes; splash off with cool water.  Repeat two to three times a week.

Take your own Hippocratic oath for skin care.

The Hippocratic oath that doctors should live by is “First, do no harm.”  It’s a good idea to follow this rule yourself to prevent damaging your skin while attempting to care for it. Many of the visible signs of aging are caused by external factors that you can at least partially control.

Be aware that skin damage doesn’t always involve pain or immediate visible change, and can go unnoticed for some time. But cumulative actions you begin taking today can also improve your skin slowly over time. So start now with these simple steps:

1.  Apply your skin care products to warm skin in order to help your skin appear healthier. This maximizes absorption. If your skin is cold, use a warm towel to warm your skin.

2.  Avoid or minimize damage from hot water and chlorine. Although taking baths and showers may seem like it’s health-promoting and relaxing, your skin may disagree – especially if you have chlorinated water, which is almost certainly the case (unless your water comes from a well).

3.  Chlorine causes oxidative damage. The hotter the water, the more potential for damage – because the rate of chemical reactions increases with temperature. Hot water may cause your skin to age faster. So what can you do? Adjust your water temperature to be a bit cooler and limit your showers to one per day, and decrease your soak time in the bath.

2.  Don’t expect immediate changes.  If you start doing everything right today, don’t be discouraged with seeming lack of progress tomorrow.  Patience pays off when you persevere.  It may take a month or even two to three months to notice changes. Plus, it’s quite possible that others will notice your increasingly youthful-looking face before you do.  Remember: it took years to get where you are today, so show patience when expecting changes and improvements.  It may take a month or even two to three months to notice changes. 3.  Don’t pull or rub your skin. Apply skin care products gently, and lightly tap for a few moments to help your skin absorb them. Rubbing stretches your skin and can promote sagging and wrinkles.

4.  Don’t smoke  for your overall health’s sake, and for younger looking skin. Smoking causes free radical production, which is one cause of the signs of aging.

5.  If you are a female, be sure to remove your makeup each evening. It’s a really bad idea to flop into bed, leaving makeup – not to mention environmental grime – on your face while you sleep. Take a couple minutes to remove it, and you’ll find your face looking and feeling younger

6.  If you will be out in the sun for extended periods of time, use sunscreen with safe and effective ingredients.

7.   It should be obvious that you should use gentle and safe skin care products – organic whenever possible.

8.   Limit exfoliation to twice per week and use a gentle exfoliator. Exfoliation refreshes your skin’s surfaces and brightens your appearance as it removes dead cells from the surface of your skin. But if you exfoliate too often or too aggressively, you risk damaging living cells.

9.  Sleep on your back. By sleeping on your back, you reduce gravitational pull on your face. If you press your face to your pillow, you are more likely to experience increased puffiness in the morning.

10. Your skin absorbs it all. Don’t compromise your health and the health of your skin by using potential poisons.
