Vitamin D can protect you from cancer

You get vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight.  People living in northern latitudes get more cancers than those in southern latitudes where there is greater year-round exposure to sun shine.

Published studies have shown cancer risk reductions of 50% and more based on higher vitamin D status.  Adequate levels of vitamin D in your body reduce cancers of the bladder, breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, lung, pancreas, and more.

You want a minimum of 1,000 IU of vitamin D a day (with calcium).  D is necessary to absorb calcium.

According to Life Extension magazine, “If all Americans began taking just 1,000 IU of vitamin D each day (along with calcium), as many as three-quarters of all cancers could be prevented in just four years.”

A rigorous study showed that participants who took 1,000 IU a day of “D” along with calcium had a 77% reduction in cancer within four years as compared to those receiving a placebo.  That’s a huge difference.

It seems that vitamin D strengthens the immune system.  That means that not only will adequate “D” help you avoid cancer, it can help prevent numerous other diseases.

  • Research has shown that the reason more of us develop infections (colds and flu) in the winter is not because of cold weather.  It’s because we stay indoors more and get less sun light.
  • “D” can protect against a wide range of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic muscle pain, metabolic syndrome, heart failure and stroke.
  • Elderly people with higher “D” levels suffer fewer falls and are less frail.

Don’t expect the government  to agree with us.  However even the NIH states that 2,000 IU a day is safe.

Warning:  As we age, our ability to use sunlight to convert “D” in the skin becomes significantly diminished, thus necessitating oral supplementation.

Supplements

You can buy supplements at your local pharmacy, grocery store or health food store.  They are also available online.

The last time we checked we could buy a 30 day supply for $30.  That’s a dollar a day, which is inexpensive compared to medications and other supplements.

The form of “D” that’s D3 is what we have found to be the best form.
