Baldness

What is baldness?

Hair is an obvious element in many cultural definitions of fashion, youth and sexuality. Therefore, it is not a surprise that many cringe at the first sign of thinning hair.

Common baldness which is sometimes called male- or female-pattern baldness, accounts for 99 percent of hair-loss in both men and women. Although its exact causes are unknown, heredity, hormones and age are contributing factors. Unlike hair loss resulting from disease or other non-hereditary factors, hair loss due to common baldness is permanent.

Causes and Risk Factors of Baldness

Factors such as diet, medications, natural hormones, pregnancy, improper hair care and certain diseases may cause temporary hair loss. Once the underlying cause is pinpointed and eliminated, the hair will most likely grow back.

As far as we know, the Cleveland Clinic is alone in tying hair loss to low iron, as most resources will tell you that there is no known food or lack of food that causes hair loss.

Myth: Wearing a hat causes baldness

The Truth: This may have come from the fact that some men try to hide their baldness with a hat, so people associate male baldness with hats. Entire teams of professional baseball players would be bald if this myth were true.

Professional treatment of baldness
There are plenty of drug options to deal with baldness.  However, we don’t know that any of them will work for sure on everyone all the time, or even part of the time.

Is there a cure?

Since so many men, and a few women, lose their hair it’s hard to believe that there is a solution.  However, many of us think we look better with hair (unless you have shaved it all off) so we do try to treat the condition.
