High stress leads to high B/P and stress relief reduces it
Feeling angry or upset increases a hormone called adrenaline, which in turn increases your heart rate and your blood pressure. Adrenaline is the body’s response to threat. Adrenalin gives us the energy for “fight or flight.”
Today, however, rather than face immediate physical threats (such as being chased by a saber toothed tiger) we face non-stop threats such as stop-and-go traffic, lack of job security, unemployment, etc.
That means you continue to have internal adrenaline buildup and thick blood. This is unhealthy because your blood also clots easier when you feel stressed, and that can lead to a heart attack.
Try EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) for stress relief
Suppressed emotions, such as anger, fear, and sadness that are not fully transformed will severely limit one’s ability to cope with the normal stresses of life and lead to higher blood pressure. It is not so much the stress that kills us, but our impaired ability to cope with it.
The recently developed energy psychology technique called EFT has proven to be a great aid for many. Why not give it a try. Read our articles on Mind-Body Healing – EFT.
Six simple steps for stress relief
Everyone experiences stress. You may feel stress about family, job, commuting, money, retirement, or an upcoming vacation. To help reduce stress:
- Think before you act

- Take an educational course
Don’t use tobacco for stress relief
Tobacco is an unhealthy way to handle stress. Unfortunately, many of us do it. Tobacco pollutants damage blood vessels and make them less flexible. The less flexible they are, the higher your blood pressure.
If you smoke and you’re ready to quit, see our articles on Smoking Cessation.
Don’t use alcohol for stress relief
Many of us have a drink because “we need it.” You only think you need it because there are better alternatives for coming down from a bad day. If you are a drinker and you’d like to cut back or cut it out of your life, see our articles on Alcohol Use.
