Wikipedia definition
Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases, it can be rather loud and quite unpleasant. The structures are usually the uvula and soft palate.
The irregular airflow is caused by a blockage and usually due to one of the following: 1) Throat weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep, 2) Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in the muscles, and 3) Fat gathering in and around the throat. 4) Obstruction in the nasal passageway
Snoring is often harmless for the snorer
Snoring is common. Probably half of us snore some time in our lives. You snore when something blocks the flow of air through your mouth and nose. The sound is caused by tissues at the top of your airway that strike each other and vibrate.
Many adults snore, especially men. Snoring increases with age and is usually harmless.
Snoring is an aggravation for a bed-mate
If you have ever slept with a snorer (or tried to sleep, anyway), you know that the nose can keep you awake or wake you up. That means it’s not harmless for you because we all need our 8 hours of sleep time. Therefore, you do want your partner to find ways to remain silent through the night
Tips for reducing snoring:
¨ Lose weight if you are overweight.
¨ Cut down or eliminate alcohol and other sedatives at bedtime.
¨ Try over-the-counter, drug-free nasal strips that help widen the nostrils.
¨ Avoid sleeping flat on your back. Sleep on your side if possible. Some doctors even suggest sewing a golf or tennis ball into the back of your night clothes. Then, if you roll over onto your back, you are reminded to stay on your side because of the discomfort. Eventually, sleeping on your side is a habit and you don’t need to be reminded.
Snoring can mean a medical problem.
