If you drink, take alpha lipoic acid

Drinking socially

Many of us drink socially and moderately, others drink heavily.  If you drink at all, the alcohol that you take into your body will end up in your blood stream.  Your body doesn’t want a polluted blood stream, so your liver is assigned the task of clearing the alcohol from your blood.

The liver can get overworked, and an overworked, non-functioning liver is what is called liver disease.  You don’t want it.  The medical solution is to find another liver that will replace your diseased one and there aren’t that many around, not to mention the cost of surgery and medication which runs into the six figures (more than $100,000).

Drink alcohol and avoid liver disease?

Take alpha lipoic acid (ALA) as a supplement.  You can buy it online.  While we can’t verify this fact ourselves, we have read that a special form called Stabilized R Alpha Lipoic Acid is the most effective supplement.  Of course the author provides a supplement with that ingredient, so they are biased.

According to Ralapure.com “Lipoic Acid has been used successfully for the maintenance of liver health and as a treatment for several toxin-related illnesses. Alpha-Lipoic acid has been used extensively in Europe for years as a non-toxic nutrient to treat various chemical overdoses such as mushroom poisoning, radiation poisoning and alcoholic hepatitis.”

It has also been used to treat elevated liver enzymes. Elevated liver enzymes, which can indicate liver damage, can be a serious problem for people with life threatening diseases. For people who take oral medications such as antibiotics and/or anti-virals, balanced liver enzymes are essential for these drugs to get metabolized properly. Unfortunately, these same drugs can cause increased liver enzymes. Alpha-Lipoic acid may help protect the liver so that you can take certain drugs.

What is alpha lipoic acid (ALA)?

It is a natural substance, produced in every higher-type cell, and it has many functions. Probably most importantly, ALA is the rate-limiting factor for the production of energy from carbohydrates (pyruvate). Without ALA, you could not obtain energy from the food you eat, and you could not stay alive.

ALA is also an excellent antioxidant and recycles other nutrients such as co-enzyme Q-10, vitamin C, and vitamin E. In addition, ALA chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and arsenic, and it stabilizes NF kappa B transcription factor so that it helps to inactivate deleterious genes. It can also help people with diabetes mellitus by increasing the sensitivity of their cells to insulin, and it helps reverse diabetic neuropathies.
