High HDL cholesterol lowers your risks

Learn your HDL number and do what you can to raise it to 50

What is HDL?
HDL stands for high density lipoproteins.  Lipoproteins are fats (lipo’s) with protein coverings that are carried throughout the blood stream to nourish our bodies.  HDL’s are called the “good” cholesterol because they escort the low density lipoproteins (LDL) out of the body.  LDL can attach to arterial walls and create plaque.

For women, some believe a high HDL is more important than a lower LDL.  We have no idea why, but study after study shows that the higher the number, the better (50 is fine).   Healics Inc. has found that the same is true for men.

Several ways you can increase your HDL

  • Exercise
  • Have no more than one drink a day,
  • Eat healthy fats, such as olive, canola oil and nuts.
  • Talk to your doctor about niacin, which raises HDL but can have side effects.
  • Ask your doctor too about pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5, which may also help.
