Alternative methods to prevent and treat migraines
Dr. Weil is a pioneer in the field of holistic health and founder and director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the College of Medicine, U of Arizona.
He suffered from migraines when he was younger, so he feels your pain. But because there aren’t many effective migraine treatments, he strongly believe prevention is key.
Several promising integrative therapies for averting these crippling headaches have emerged, which can complement or replace prescription medications with consultation from your doctor.
Start with a diary. Look for triggers.
Before trying alternative measures, he recommends keeping a migraine diary for several months to help identify triggers: Track your diet, exercise, stress levels, and symptoms. Some common culprits include chocolate, food additives, hormonal fluctuations, weather, and stress. Although some triggers are unavoidable, you can steer clear of most.
Supplements may help for avoidance
Certain supplements may help. Studies show that regular use of an extract of the butterbur plant significantly reduces the number of migraines you get. Check health food stores for capsules free of PAs, compounds found in crude butterbur that are toxic to the liver, and follow package directions. (There is plenty of info on the internet if you do an online search for butterbur.)
Evidence suggests that 400 mg of vitamin B2 daily may cut the frequency and duration of migraines, but you’ll need a prescription for that dosage.
Alternative treatments may work
Biofeedback and acupuncture are also effective for some people. A recent study concluded that a course of biofeedback training reduced migraines by 56%. And Headache (March 2008) reported that biweekly acupuncture helped prevent migraines in those who are prone to them.
