Dental Care Prevents Heart Attacks

take care of your teeth for better heart health

Periodontal disease is internal inflammation, and that inflammation damages your arteries

Brush your teeth every day
It is important to keep your teeth clean and massage your gums.  Brush at least once a day.  Brushing after each meal is best, even if not convenient.

Floss your teeth regularly
Flossing cleans out any food or plaque between the teeth.  Avoiding periodontal disease prevents inflammation in the arteries, which helps you head off heart disease.  Most people don’t know that your oral health affects your arterial health, and that includes blood flow to the heart and sexual organs, and maybe even wrinkles on your skin.

Of course, flossing your teeth regularly helps to keep your teeth healthy.  Flossing cleans out any food particles that may have gotten caught between your teeth.  As my dentist said, “You only floss the teeth you intend to keep.”

See your dentist regularly
You should have semiannual checkups with your dentist.  First, for professional teeth cleaning, and secondly for checking your gums and the inside of your mouth for disease.  Disease of the gums is called periodontal disease.
