Natural approaches
The following are ideas for calming a cough with natural substances. Many medical web sites deal with cough medicines, while we focus on non-drug approaches. You can do an online search for “cough medicine” for their information.
Cocoa
It is said that eating chocolate can calm a cough. Theoromine, a chemical in cocoa beans, was more effective at calming persistent coughs thancodeine was, and without causing drowsiness.
Please understand that the healthful ingredient is part of the cacao bean grown in the tropics. Cacao is in turn called cocoa in the US, and when mixed with sugar and milk becomes what we know as chocolate.
You want as much of the cocoa as you can get. To go 100% go on the internet and purchase cacao nibs (nibs are the beans broken down into pieces). The next best is to buy a dark chocolate with 70% or more chocolate. Of course, the greater the percent of cacao, the less sweet the chocolate tastes. Just remember, it’s the cacao not the sugar that you want.
Mullein
Dr. Andrew Weil recommends adding a teaspoon or a tincture of mullein, a wildflower that loosens mucus and soothes your throat to a little warm water and drinking it every four hours.
